We support the resistance of communities that defend Life.

The defense of territory is at the heart of UNIR-Haiti’s work. We accompany grassroots organizations resisting extractive megaprojects, promoting environmental justice, community sovereignty, and the right of peoples to decide over their land.

Our work combines political education, collective knowledge production, transcultural exchanges, and advocacy strategies—always from a popular, anti-colonial perspective committed to life.

What do we do in this program?

Community diagnosis and mapping

We facilitate participatory processes of territorial analysis that enable communities to identify threats, resources, and their own strategies of defense. These exercises reinforce knowledge of the local environment and strengthen bottom-up decision-making.

Popular political education

We create educational tools that strengthen collective analysis and critical thinking in defense of the territory.

One of our most widely shared materials is 50 Questions About Mining, a card game designed to raise awareness about the impacts of large-scale metal mining. It can be played in pairs or in groups. Since 2020, we have distributed over 100 copies in different communities across Haiti.

Transcultural exchanges

We carry out educational, political, cultural, and community exchanges with social organizations from different countries. These encounters make it possible to join forces, share knowledge, and build a common agenda for defending territory against megaprojects.

Exchange with Pueblo Viejo Organization (Dominican Republic)

Meeting with the Mexican Network of People Affected by Mining (REMA)

Itinerant Exchange for Territorial Defense (Haiti)

From November 13 to 16, 2023, various communities in northern and northeastern Haiti became the setting for a powerful exchange among land defenders from different parts of Abya Yala. This gathering, organized by the Itinerant University of Resistance, brought together voices and experiences of struggle against extractive megaprojects.

We share here the report from this journey of reflection, solidarity, and collective action in defense of life and the commons.

Community-based accompaniment and advocacy

We believe that the responses to the territorial, social, and environmental crisis in Haiti are already being built from within the communities. That’s why we support grassroots organizing processes that defend life, land, and practices of solidarity.

We promote actions for visibility, national and international coordination, and political communication that amplify the voices of those who resist from their territories.
